New York Power Authority Approves $37.2 Million Investment in Drone Program for Enhanced Inspections
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has taken a significant step towards becoming an industry leader in robotic initiatives by approving a $37.2 million Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) drone program.
This funding was approved so as to facilitate the roll-out of new inspection capabilities over the next five years, aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and cost reduction in NYPA's operations. By harnessing cutting-edge drone technologies, the state utility giant is poised to play a crucial role in New York's clean energy future.
Automated Inspections for Safer and More Efficient Evaluations
Chairman of NYPA, John R. Koelmel, expressed his enthusiasm for the program's expansion, stating, "Using new drone technologies coupled with the expertise of our talented, asset-minded employees will allow for more real-time access to data and the ability to more quickly make informed decisions."
The first phase of funding, amounting to $9.6 million, has been authorized to establish foundational measures essential for current and future advancement capabilities. This allocation will cover equipment, software, personnel, training, procurement, regulatory compliance, and contingencies.
A Well-Developed Drone Program
NYPA's drone program has been in development since 2019, with policies and procedures being established to guide drone usage. In 2021, the organization appointed a drone program manager to create a unified program in line with their strategic VISION2030 goals.
The progress has been evident, with almost 100 pilots trained, software implemented to support drone pilots, and standardized equipment being procured to bolster NYPA's drone fleet.
Enhancing Safety and Efficiency Across Operations
The integration of robotics and drones in NYPA's operations offers multiple benefits, foremost among them being the enhanced safety of personnel.
By reducing the need for manned helicopter flights and manual inspections, drones protect workers from exposure to dangerous situations like climbing transmission poles or being near energised substation equipment.
High-Tech Inspections with Advanced Capabilities
The drones used by NYPA are equipped with high-resolution cameras and sensors capable of detecting faults and anomalies invisible to the human eye. This technology proactively identifies and addresses potential hazards, safeguarding the infrastructure and maintaining a reliable power supply.
Peter Kalaitzidis, the Power Authority's robotics program manager, highlighted the significance of incorporating drones into their day-to-day operations, stating, "With the use of drone technology, we can more easily capture the real-world state of our operations to support real-time decision making."
The ability to access accurate and up-to-date data in real time empowers NYPA to make well-informed choices promptly.
NYPA's drones have been predominantly used for evaluating transmission lines. However, their utilization expanded this year to include dam safety, waterway monitoring, and security support at various sites. The authority has ambitious future plans, envisioning the incorporation of drones in inspections of bridges, dams, roofs, and waterways.
FAA Approval for Remote Drone Operations
Earlier this year, NYPA received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for flying drones beyond the visual line of sight of the pilot in command. This waiver enables NYPA to conduct fully remote drone operations, including asset and vegetative management inspections at its Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project in Schoharie County.
