DRONE INSURANCE: Am I concerned?

Unmanned aerial vehicles (#UAVs) have existed for many years now, their uses have risen fastly these last years, and the risks associated to them too. Therefore, as it was expected, regulation about insurance drones have been well set out to better regulate the drone operations worldwide. In this aspect, the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency- has been deeply engaged with building the policies and regulatory framework for the drone eco-system in Europe, and has recently taken the initiative for the first time to establish a guideline for you to know when you should get insured for drone operations:  https://lnkd.in/esNMzmUk

Here below our principal highlights in terms of drones insurance:

✔Do I need insurance for my drone?
The answer depends on what you, as a #drone pilot, intend to do with your device. Drones have the potential to do amazing things and if you buy one, you become a drone pilot, and therefore responsible for what could happen when flying it, even if you are a skilled pilot, we all know that accidents can happen, either you use your drone for pleasure or for commercial purposes.

By getting drone #insurance, you are protected against third-party damage or injury claims as a result of your drone operation. The coverage not only gives you peace of mind, but protects you in the worst cases. In fact the coverage is compelled by EASA if the drone is above 20 kg. If below, insurance is not required, however, for most of European countries, the Third- party liability is mandatory.

✔What insurance do I choose?
The accurate insurance depends on the activity you carry out. Indeed, you can choose the insurance you consider suits you best, as long as the policy comply with your national Aviation Authority. As insurance policies may have exclusions, we strongly advise you to review the insurance terms, especially that the activities you perform are covered.

Aside from the third-party primary coverage, -which is compulsory-, if your business’ operations rely on your drone, you should seriously consider purchasing a drone insurance policy. While it may not be legally required, the hull coverage is a worthy investment, if your drone crash, the damage to the drone and the cost of replacement will be covered. The certificate of insurance also provides reliability to your clients.
